The Spontaneous Absorption of Amœbic Abscess of the Liver under Emetine Therapy

چکیده
In a recent authoritative work on tropical medicine (1) in the section on amoebic abscess of the liver, emetine is said to have " robbed the surgeon of much of the surgery associated with amoebic inflammations of the liver, which, in any degree short of an actual abscess, will almost certainly yield to this treatment. If an abscess appears to be forming, or has already formed, operation is necessary." The writer prefers an open operation, although he remarks that " simple aspiration, which may be repeated several times, is also advised, but is only likely to be successful when the collection of pus is quite small and emetine is pushed." The administration of emetine forms a very essential part of the after-treatment; " from the day after operation emetine is given." I think most surgeons at the present time would prefer to make the use of emetine a very essential part of the pre-operative preparation, if not the sole treatment of the disease. This course is

In view of the report in the Indian Medical Gazette for October 1924, p. 488, by Captain ASargood Fry, i.m.s., of spontaneous absorption of large abscesses of the liver under emetine therapy alone, without even aspiration, the following two cases may be of interest. In the first a large abscess was present, and, with the exception of 1 c.c. of pus withdrawn by a hypodermic syringe in order to c...

The object of this paper is twofold:? 1. To show that liver abscesses can be cured by emetine alone. 2. To suggest definite rules for their treatment. Sir Leonard Rogers in his Lettsomian Lectures, reported in the Lancet of March 11th, 1922, p. 465 ct scq., gives a masterly statement of his researches. He states that single or multiple abscesses can be cured by simple drug treatment, and that a...

say very little on the value of hypodermic injections of emetine hydrochloride introduced by me last year, as the rapid specific curative action of this treatment has been generally recognized in all parts of the world where amoebic cases are met with, and it is not too much to say that one of the most distressing and intractable diseases of tropical and sub-tropical climates has been conquered.
